In response to the crisis in American democracy, he founded Engaged Futures and After We Vote Action: A Cross partisan - Pro democracy political action think and do tank, and co-founded After We Vote on Clubhouse.

He’s an active member of the Washington D.C. think-tank American Enterprise Institute Leadership Network (AEI).
Smith is the creator of The A.R.T. of Voter Engagement; an outreach model, for Attracting - Relating - Transitioning and Transforming political party growth and policy advocacy. When asked, his two teen children describe Leo’s work as; “He teaches people how to love America!”
